Bio

Dena Hengst is a painter based in central Massachusetts whose work moves between observation and abstraction. Many of her paintings explore water as both subject and metaphor, reflecting emotional states and moments of quiet contemplation.

A former public school art teacher for fifteen years, she holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Art from Anna Maria College. She has exhibited in solo and juried exhibitions including the Fitchburg Art Museum Regional Exhibition of Art, Arts Worcester, and the Petersham Art Center. Her work is held in private and corporate collections.

Artist Statement

Water is a recurring subject in my work because it offers both visual beauty and a space for reflection. Whether I am painting waves, shoreline stones, or the shifting surface of water, I am drawn to the way these landscapes mirror inner experience.

Many paintings begin with observations made in nature, where water, land, light, and atmosphere continually reshape one another. These places invite quiet attention. A calm surface can suggest contemplation, while waves and currents speak to change, uncertainty, and resilience.

Other paintings begin more directly through the act of painting itself. Through layering, scraping, and mark-making, the surface develops its own rhythm and structure, allowing meaning to emerge through the process.

For me, whether realistically or abstractly painted, the canvas is ultimately a meeting place between the outer world and the inner one.
